Delivering High-Speed Broadband to Hamilton

Hamilton based Velocity Networks is a broadband provider that offers a range of some of the best broadband plans available in New Zealand. Partnered with Hamilton Fibre Network (HFN), Velocity is a collaborative project led by Hamilton City Council, Wintec and Telco Infrastructure Investments Ltd, with support from the University of Waikato and Environment Waikato.

Their combined fibre networks span the city, providing ultra-high speed broadband internet access (also referred to as Metro Ethernet) to commercial buildings at speeds of up to 1Gbps (1000Mbps). Operating as an 'open access' community network, users are free to subscribe to services and broadband plans from a range of application and internet service providers (ISP's) that operate on the network.

The project has a number of implementation phases and is expected to be completed by 2010. The initial rollout of the extensive fibre network has been funded by a $3.3 million grant from the Ministry of Economic Development, as part of the Government's Digital Strategy.

The fibre network has received a seed grant from the Ministry of Economic Development Broadband Challenge Fund which was used to upgrade the existing network to modern standards suitable for commercial use. That upgrade work is now complete and the network is up and running connecting Hamilton businesses right now.

A number of ISP service providers are already offering exciting broadband plans and services on the network, with a large number of end users now enjoying high speed broadband access through Velocity's fibre network across Hamilton.

Velocity has also applied for further Government funding in order to extend the fibre network to even more parts of Hamilton. If this funding application is successful, the fibre network will more than double in size and will be able to provide 1 Gbps Ethernet access to schools, medical centres and businesses throughout many parts of Hamilton.

Velocity also offers independent project management and consulting services for specialised projects in the Information and Communications Technology sphere, ranging from network and IT hardware through to software implementation.

Velocity is a corporate member of TUANZ NZ (Telecommunications Association of New Zealand) and ISPANZ (internet Service Providers Association of New Zealand).
